In partnership with regional healthcare officials and local leaders, HART's 2025 team brought specialists in plastic surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), dentistry, and general surgery to communities in Ghana with urgent, unmet medical needs.
The team spent the majority of the mission operating in facilities in Goaso and Kukuom, while mobile medical clinics went well beyond the on-site surgical care, addressing the primary needs and preventative care of rural surrounding communities such as Agyrekrom and Beposo. The team also delivered clinical training at regional nursing colleges and donated essential medical supplies, supporting Ghana's next generation of healthcare providers.
A November mission starts in February. Here's how supplies travel from Utah warehouses to rural operating rooms.
Once a clinic is ready through community collaboration, heavy equipment like anesthesia machines and operating beds ships months in advance. For a November mission, pallets leave in February or March to arrive on time.
Supplies are packed for efficiency and unwrapped stateside to minimize waste, preventing trash accumulation that burdens the local economy. On arrival, everything is unpacked, sorted, and staged for the operating room.
From Accra, trucks are loaded and luggage stacked for the journey to rural mission sites. Local officials work right alongside the team, and despite the jet lag, everyone lends a hand.
Surgical teams, mobile clinics, and education sessions run in parallel, each planned with local communities so every initiative is culturally appropriate, language-aware, and built to last.
Every mission follows a full-year project timeline: team formation and program design in winter, NGO coordination and supply sorting through spring, mission execution in fall, then debriefing, sponsor reports, and effectiveness surveys, with monthly NGO contact all year round.
The 2025 mission stands on the shoulders of November 2023, when volunteers and local healthcare professionals worked side by side on surgical care, new geriatric outreach, and community education across the Brong Ahafo Region.
That mission's survey work, designed with a nursing college of 200+ students, now shapes our geriatric care support, and its nursing college visits laid the groundwork for this year's expanded clinical training.
